GPS use can lead to treasure!
With technology the way it is these days, it is not uncommon to take a GPS, mobile phone and even laptop camping and hiking! Certainly, the internet provides a valuable resource in the planning and execution of a good hiking trip. But did you know there is a fun way to combine all of this things on a simple walk in the bush?
Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and "treasure," usually toys or trinkets of little value. Today, well over 650,000 geocaches are registered on various websites devoted to the pastime. Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antartica.
There are currently dozens of these caches hidden along the entire route of the Bibbulmun Track. You have probably even passed one without realising it!
