Big Trees Down!

I have never experienced so many instances of fallen trees in such a small area!  Whilst undetaking some survey work for the Bibbulmun Track Foundation (Palings Rd) over the weekend I was able to hear about and observe numerous fallen trees.

At Boarding House a fellow hiker who had walked from Tom Rd campsite to Boarding House campsite reported to me that two big trees had fallen across the Bibbulmun Track.  They were so big he had trouble getting over them!

On my walk into Tom Rd campsite from Rob Rd, one giant had fallen across the track.  The length of the tree and the surrounding terrain made it difficult to walk around either end, so I was forced to climb over the mass of broken limbs and cracked trunk.

On our drive back from Tom Rd campsite, along Donnelly Drive, we came across a medium size tree that had fallen across the road.  This must of happened only minutes before we arrived.

Fortunately for us, the crown of the tree had fallen over the far side of the road. We were able to move the numerous broken branches so we had the narrowest of sections to pass through.  The tree was too heavy to lift and if it had fallen 2 metres further across the road it would have been impassable.

Trees was the theme for the weekend, as we had scaled the dizzy heights of Gloucester Tree before our walk.
