Granite Circuit - Final Word

One of the main reasons for walking the Goldfields was to see what it had to offer.  I have camped at Burra Rock, Victoria Rock and Cave Hill in the past and enjoyed what they have to offer.  I’ve done the Holland Track by 4WD and explored the numerous rocks along the way.

When you drive to Coolgardie and pass through the Boorabbin area, I do enjoy the feel of the white gums and the sparse vegetation that seems to compliment it.

The reality is far from the visions I had for the area.  The vegetation is not ideal for walking.  Other than the rocks mentioned above, the landscape has little to offer.  To cap it off, it is one hell of a long and boring drive to get there.

So with egg on my face and huge slice of humble pie I admit I was wrong.  The Granite Circuit was a vision of grandeur.  I sometimes forget that I live in the 21st century and not the 19th.  I forget that I am a 40-year-old Accountant and not a hardened explorer.

On the way home I visited the Coolgardie cemetery to pay my respects to one of people I wish I could be – Ernest Giles.  You can’t help but live in awe and what people like Giles achieved in their day.  It must have taken a special person.

I also cast my mind to a young bloke I featured in my recent blog “Owen walks on the wild side”.  He walked from Kalgoorlie to Perth this year.  That is over 600km!  Giles would have been proud of this bloke.

So, its back the Bibbulmun Track for me.  To easy walk trails, picturesque bush and comfortable campsites.  To friendly faces, reassurance and security.

But don’t let me put you off.  If you want a crack at the Goldfields let me know.  I have maps, co-ords and much more.  Who knows – perhaps you can find Toonarrie Rock!
