Granite Circuit - Part 2
My route was pretty straight-forward. Follow the old track to the rock west of Burra Rock and then set a compass bearing to Toonarrie Rock. As a point of reference I turned on the GPSr and made a note of the distance and bearing to Toonarrie. I copied the bearing to my compass and estimated my arrival sometime between 1pm and 2pm.
There must have been considerable rain during the week as there were plenty of puddles and washouts. The disused track was more like a riverbed and heavy under foot. My heavy pack and ample frame made sufficient indents in the sand to make the going harder than expected. Once leaving the track I encountered typical Goldfields scrub – a horrible combination of thin tree like sticks (that protruded in all directions) and chest high scrub. The ground was littered with fallen branches and walking in a straight line for long was impossible. It was a bit like playing “in and out the windows”.
My first “waypoint” was the rock just west of Burra Rock and it was reached in relatively good time. Like Burra Rock, Cave Hill and others, the rock contained a man made wall around its circumference in which to channel the water to one of two dams on the rock. Some of the walls had fallen over, though the level of water in the dam suggested it still worked to some degree. After finding the highest point on the rock, I took a photo of Burra Rock and then turned to chart my own path into my (personal) history books and Toonarrie Rock.
