Granite Circuit - Part 1

I headed off 5pm Friday from Perth, bound for Coolgardie.  My ETA was past 11pm and although not feeling tired decided to set up camp at Boondi Rock some 90km short of the camel town.  Drizzle followed me most the way and I wondered if I had made a bad decision not to pack wet weather gear.

I set up the tent in the beam of my headlights and was tucked safely away in no time.  Despite the iffy weather I was in no hurry to get into my sleeping bag or liner for the night was far from cold.  The bush was quiet except for the occasional heavy drop of rain from the leaves above me and the roar of semi trailer engines on the highway in the distance.  After quickly recapping my journey so far, I unzipped my sleeping bag, laid it over me and went to sleep.

My $20 tent (all my good tents were out for hire) did the job, although at 6ft 2in I was touching either end of the walls!  I hadn’t been to Boondi Rock before, so took advantage of the much finer weather and explored the rock and dam (see below).

It didn’t take long before I was packed up and on my way to Burra Rock.  Upon reaching Coolgardie, I dropped of my trek details at the Police Station. I hadn’t planned on getting lost but history had shown I was good at getting myself into situations – it was better to be safe.

I arrived at Burra Rock around 9.30am.  When I arrived at the campsite, which thankfully was well away from the day use area, I parked the car and began to get ready for my walk to Toonarrie Rock, some 10km WNW of my location.
